Rhodolite rhododendrons
Discovered in North Carolina in 1882, rhodolite was named by gem expert George Kunz (1856-1932) after its resemblance to a mountain rhododendron that grows in North Carolina.
More specifically, rhodolite is derived from the Greek “rhodo”, which means rose and “lithos” for stone.
But rhodolite has been known since Antiquity, because there are many jewels adorned with rhodolite among the Egyptians.
Kunz described Rhodolite as “a pale rose-red verging on violet like that of certain roses and rhododendrons”.
