The name “Topaz” probably comes from the old name “Topazos” of the island “Zabargad”, also called “Saint John Island” off the coast of Egypt
in the Red Sea, where there are peridots, called topazes until the Middle Ages.
Blue topaz is the best known and most common of all varieties of topaz.
